The fantasy universe created by Marvel Comics features a character whose super power is a catastrophically destructive voice. The tiniest sound (or whisper) made by Black Bolt is liable to obliterate an entire city. With a voice that can spell death, Black Bolt has learned to maintain absolute silence in order to preserve the Inhuman race over which he presides as king.
By contrast, we have a King whose voice brings life and whose words do not destroy, but speak into existence. For “by the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth…he spoke and it came to be; he commanded and it stood firm” (Psalm 33:6,9). As human beings created in the very image of this King (Genesis 1:26-27), our tongues or words also carry immeasurable power for great good or great evil, for “death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit” (Proverbs 18:21, NKJV).
Today and always, we have a choice to harness the power in our mouths either after the pattern of Black Bolt and death or God and life. May we choose to speak life to the dying among us, healing to the sick in our midst and light to those lost along the way.
Be blessed,
R
