Singer/songwriter Tauren Wells poses the following questions in an article inspired by his song When We Pray. “If God answered the prayers you’ve been praying, would it change anyone else’s world but your own? How much of God’s miraculous power are we unable to experience because we never pray prayers that are bigger than us?”
Jesus provides some insight into what the ideal answers to those questions look like. In teaching his disciples to pray, Jesus gave a model that opens with a God sized perspective: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven’” (Matthew 6:9-10). This prayer foundation suggests that everything which is wrong with the world stems from a departure from God’s perfect will and the advancement of his kingdom on earth.
As God’s perfect will begins to manifest, the way opens for us all to receive our daily bread or blessings, to have our sins forgiven as we extend the same forgiving grace God bestows on us, and to be delivered from the temptations of the evil one (vv 11-13). Only God can right our world, for his “is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever” (v 13, NKJV). May we call on him for our world today.
Do your prayers reflect anyone else’s world but your own? How will you invite God to display his miraculous power in our world today?
Your Kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven – (Matthew 6:10).
