Text: Lamentations 3:19-23
Key verse: “They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:23).
I watched amused as a popular news channel featured celebrity new year resolutions ranging from less cheese consumption to increased church attendance. However, I turned thoughtful when one of the interviewees stressed that her resolution for the current new year was the same as the year before and the one before that. This lady had realized that every single day offered new opportunities to make better decisions – whether that day was at the end of a year, or at the beginning.
Prophet Jeremiah came to a similar realization of the opportunities afforded by each day. As he lamented the suffering and destruction of his homeland, “this [he called] to mind, and therefore [had] hope: because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is [God’s] faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:21-23).
In the midst of his despair, Jeremiah realized that the failings and disappointment of yesterday need not determine today’s trajectory. In His great faithfulness and mercy, God gives us daily opportunities to live up to His image in us. Regardless of what happened yesterday, today we can be more loving, forgiving, kind and diligent. Today and every day, may we let go of yesterday’s burdens and decide to honor God’s great gift of a new beginning, a new chance, a new morning.
Thank you, Father, for yet another day, year and decade in which to know you more
Today, this new year, is a fresh gift from God, totally unhindered by yesterday
