One of my favorite lines in Donita K. Paul’s ‘The Realmwalkers’ Christian Fantasy young adult book series says that ‘the called must call upon the caller.’ I don’t usually pause to ponder wording in the middle of an action packed book, but this line had me thinking.
It can be very easy to relegate the Christian walk to one of doing good deeds, and generally trying to be a good person while attending church. However, the lives of Biblical heroes tell us a very different story. These men and women faced down gigantic odds, standing tall in the heat of battle. Some lost their lives along the way, but they never lost sight of their ultimate goal – answering the Caller’s call. Abraham answered the call to leave his family and go on an unknown journey, Moses answered the mystery of a burning bush that wasn’t consumed, Samuel answered when God spoke, Joseph listened to the angel and stayed with Mary, Paul responded to a vision of Jesus and each one of the disciples left their livelihoods to follow Jesus.
Jeremiah 33:3 says “Call unto me, and I will show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” None of us comes into the world knowing why we are here, why we were chosen to be formed in His image. Only God can reveal to us the mystery of who we are – after all, He designed us. We are all called into being by God, but only those who take the time to seek out and listen to His purpose for their lives ever have a chance of fulfilling it. God is always present and speaking; however, we will never know this unless we turn our hearts to call out and seek Him in return. Truly, the called must call upon the caller in order to realize and manifest the destiny unto which they are called.
As we embark upon a new year filled with new challenges and prospects, let us accept the challenge to call unto the One who has called us, that we may realize the prospect of finding Him. In the spirit of Philippians 3:13-14, may we forget those things which are behind, and reach forward to those things which are ahead, and to which we are called. By His grace, let us press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. And may we reach our goal in Jesus Mighty Name.
Be blessed,
R
